Smartphone Camera Equipment

Everyone can appreciate the simplicity and convenience of an iPhone, Android, or Tablet when recording videos these days. A tripod is very helpful for a seamless, easy-to-film and watch the video. Keeping the camera steady is less distracting and it allows you to set up more visually pleasing angles.

Your Audio

While not necessary, an external microphone delivers higher quality audio. Your voice will sound verbally sharper, and you won’t get the distracting background noise caused by other sounds in your location.

You can find external microphones at Best Buy or Amazon. If not using an external microphone, bring the phone as close to you as possible.

If someone is filming you, they can cup their hand around the phone (as seen in the image) to better capture your voice.

Lighting

Above all things, the most important rule for lighting in your video is to make sure that your light source is in front of your face (behind or next to the camera). Lighting from behind only makes you (the subject) appear dark, the opposite of what you would want. Natural lighting is the most pleasing on camera. This would be any light from outside coming through a window, or simply filming outside if it’s not too noisy.

If natural light isn’t an option, you can use a stand-up lamp with a flexible neck that you can point towards yourself to illuminate your frame. If using a light source from a lamp, try to use more than one set on either side of the camera. This lights up both sides of the face, getting rid of unwanted shadows. You can also purchase a ring light (as seen in the image).

Framing and Backgrounds

Make sure you hold your phone horizontally. Filming vertically, especially with a smartphone, only creates black bars on the sides of your footage during editing.

It’s also important to be at eye level with your camera. Speak to the camera like you would with a person. Look into the lens. This is best for the viewer of your video.

Clothing

It’s best not to wear white or black. These colors do not stand out on video. Wear your favorite color (other than white or black!) Solid colors show up best on camera.

Location

Whenever possible, film outside in daylight or at least near a bright window. It’ll yield crisp video that looks like it was shot in high definition rather than on a smartphone. If recording inside, try to record in a room that is not cluttered. You want people paying attention to YOU, not the stacks of loose and unorganized papers behind you. Plants, books, and shelves are just a few things that look good in a video.

Have fun!

When all is said and done, the most important thing is that you’re comfortable on camera. Feel free to practice a few times – and even in front of the bathroom mirror ahead of time!
